I had an interesting conversation the past week on whether or not business technology – computers, cell phones, UPS, network hardware, etcetera – is just inherently evil. This discussion was with my cousin who pointed out that so much of the components are going to cause problems down the line – batteries, silicon chips, all the various chemicals involved not only in the hardware but in creating the hardware. he maintains that there’s no hope, that the accelleration of technology adoption will force environmentally destructive approaches to stay competetive..
I couldn’t disagree more. While there are abundant opportunities for mis-use of technology and making poor decisions, that’s not a foregone conclusion. Companies are all becoming more concious of the impact of their decisions; recycling and reusability efforts among technologies such as computers and cell phones are accellerating as well; and standards such as PUE and EPEAT – and of course, more comprehensive measurements such as DGE- all will contribute to awareness, adoption, and ultimately, increased profitability.
As an aside, in case anyone wondered, I’ve been out the past week or so due to a death in the family – not due to blatant laziness or distraction. My efforts to post regularly resume now
