MacBook Air – a giant ecotech step forward?

Nice article outlining the green efforts Apple has made in the just announced MacBook Air:

Apple Grows Greener with MacBook Air « Earth2Tech

As the author says, incremental steps, but at least Apple appears to be honoring Steve Jobs pledge from a year ago.

The one exception: the battery can’t be replaced, which is a shame.

Which leads us to a techie note: should you buy one? Data-Green focuses on green tech initiatives that also make business sense – is the MBA such a beast?

Well, the answer is a solid ‘maybe.’ The performance characteristics are likely to be worse than that of other systems, unless you opt for the solid state drive, which is sure to boost performance but boosts the price tg by $1000 as well. The CPU is slower than that in other systems as well – but those are compromises one makes with subnotebooks.

I am looking forward to see where it falls on the EPEAT scale – other Apple notebooks have rolled in with a solid Silver rating.

For the moment, I’m noncommital. Having said that, I reserve the right to change my mind once they hit the Apple stores and I get a chance to play with one!
